What is this?
This is a
four-part
hands-on workshop where participants will create their own small table. The Basic
design is a cherry Shaker table. Participants may elect to modify this design to
suit their furniture preferences. For example, some folks may elect to make a bed side table, coffee
table, hall table, plant stand, etc. All tables will feature mortise and tenon joinery and various styling
features. Only five participants will be accepted for the workshop due to space constraints.
Elements of the workshop will include:
- mortise and tenon joinery
- tapering legs
- hand planning surfaces
- using card scrapers
- glue up process
- design for usage
- material layout for efficiency
- machining materials
- edge treatments that suggest style
- hand cut as well as machined operations
- grain matching, material selections, grain orientation
for functions
Participants can elect to bring their own wood materials or
elect to use materials in Alan’s shop. Black cherry and walnut
wood will be available at a modest cost. Depending on your table size and material, the cost is typically
in the $40-$50 range. If you plan to bring your own wood, please consult Alan for additional details. Any
participant who may be uncomfortable with stationary power tools or anyone wishing to get a refresher
on power tools is encouraged to sign up for the RWS workshop on “Stationary Power Tools, Tips, Tricks,
and Techniques” available December 2, 2023.
Participants must bring eye and hearing protection.
Additionally, participants should bring their own
snacks and lunch. Extra credit shall be awarded to anyone bringing goodies to share.
Note: This is a 4 part workshop. You are signing up for the following dates: 2/10/2024, 2/24/20224, 3/9/2024 and 3/16/2024. One registration fee of $120 includes all four dates.
