Scott Grove (September 18th and 19th)

JAMIE MAKINSTER | Published on 8/20/2020

Virtual Visit: Scott will do both his Friday evening presentation and his Saturday workshop via Zoom.

Scott Grove is an international award-winning master craftsman, a woodworker, artist, sculptor, teacher, author, tool designer, and YouTuber who lectures, demonstrates, and judges at national conferences as well as regional and local woodworking groups. He is also a contributing writer for Woodworking Network, Fine Woodworking, Woodshop News, FDM, and American Woodturner. He’s published three books on woodworking with a fourth about the business of craft on the way. His work can be found in prominent museum, gallery, and private collections.

Scott’s Friday presentation (Sept. 18 @ 6:45) is entitled Developing Designs by Expanding Your Creativity.

One of Scott Grove’s mottos is Find the line and then cross it, and during this class, he’ll take you through some fun creative thinking exercises that help you find your own line, to look sideways (or upside down) and break through possible barriers that impede your creativity. He’ll show you how to explore, discover, develop, and refine a personal passion that you can incorporate it into any piece. This process also gives your work a personal soul, a unique story, and makes its creation and display more meaningful.

Everyone should have a sketch pad and pencil on hand, and be ready to push your creative limits. During the live, interactive demonstration, his wife and co-host, Nancy, helps organize Q&A and provides tools and supplier resource links in real time, too.

Scott’s Saturday morning demonstration workshop (Sept 19 from 9am – 11am) will focus on making an American Flag Cutting Board.

A woodworking router is one of the most versatile tools in your shop. And when it’s combined with templates, accurate profiles, curved seams, and inlays can be performed with surefire success every time. Scott Grove, internationally-renown master craftsman, will demonstrate all the steps required to safely and precisely create and use router templates to create an American Flag Cutting Board. With a series of templates, a router bit is off-set to either side of the cutting seam for a perfect fit. This is much like small inlay template guide kits but supersized. This technique can also be used to add a curved hardwood edge to any table.

The cost of this workshop is $10.

Scott has spent 10+ years teaching this technique and has even written a book about the process. He will share all the tips, tricks, and pitfalls to avoid: he’s made all the mistakes so you don’t have to. During the live, interactive demonstration, his wife and co-host, Nancy, helps organize Q&A and provides tools and supplier resource links in real time, too.
